The A90 links Edinburgh with Dundee, Aberdeen and the north east coast, carrying the bulk of Scotland's east-side freight and the oil industry's traffic into Aberdeen. Since the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route opened in 2019 it skirts the city to the west, and the Dundee Kingsway and Laurencekirk junctions are its familiar slow points.
